Dreamer detained after press conference to be released, attorney says

Daniela Vargas speaks in a news conference in Jackson

Vargas spoke at a rally in Jackson, Mississippi, last week about her dream of becoming a math teacher.

"This is an ICE decision to release her".

"We're gonna show great heart, DACA is a very, very hard subject for me, I will tell you", Mr. Trump said at a press conference in February.

Earlier reports last week suggested that Vargas would be deported without a hearing following the expiration of her Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status. Her attorneys celebrated her release, but warned there will continue challenging the government's actions in the case.

Thomas Byrd, an ICE public affairs officer, could not comment specifically on Vargas' order of supervision, but did say orders of supervision rarely mean confinement or daily contact.

"One of our attorneys have spoken to her and she's outside the detention center and on her way back to Jackson, Miss.", said Karen Tumlin, legal director for the National Immigration Law Center, which has joined with the Southern Poverty Law Center and two law firms to secure her release and take on her case regarding her arrest by ICE.

Vargas' attorneys expected her to return to MS, where she was arrested by ICE agents on March 1 after speaking at a press conference outside Jackson City Hall that was organized by a coalition of civil rights lawyers and other advocates for immigrants. Her father and brother were detained outside their home by ICE agents on February 15.

Vargas was brought to the United States by her family from their native Argentina when she was just 7, Peterson previously told BuzzFeed News.

Before the press conference was held, Peterson said she and Vargas were aware that she could face arrest since her DACA status had expired.

Her lawyers said Friday they believe she was detained by ICE as retribution for "speaking out" at the March 1 news conference.

Her attorneys said she still is under an order of supervision that for now requires her to check-in next month with her local ICE office.

"She was very surprised this morning when this all happened, and very relieved", Peterson told reporters on a conference call.

She said the events "sharpens the question".
