AG Jeff Sessions: Maryland's Trust Act would put residents at risk

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said on Monday that cities and states that protect immigrant felons from federal immigration laws may lose grants from the Justice Department.
After years of violating federal law, the attorney general said communities not working with federal authorities to ensure illegal immigrants detained by law enforcement are deported will suffer consequences.
Sessions may find his ability to influence local decision-making through the Justice Department's purse to be limited, because only a fraction of the Justice Department´s grant dollars flow directly to the cities and counties that determine whether to cooperate with federal immigration agents.
An August 2016 study of approximately 80 jurisdictions conducted by researchers at the University of California at Riverside and Highline College compared sanctuary cities to "similarly situated" non-sanctuary cities, based on census data and a number of other factors.
Cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and others have long declined to enforce federal immigration laws aggressively, setting up a conflict with the hardline stance of the new administration, led by President Donald Trump and Sessions.
Sessions' statement drew swift pushback from NY state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who said his office would continue helping local governments "have the tools they need to protect their immigrant communities".
Cities with policies that prevent police and other public employees from notifying the United States federal government of the immigration status of individuals when they are arrested or seek assistance from public institutions have been called "sanctuary cities". He referenced the murder of Kate Steinle, a 32-year-old woman who was shot by an undocumented immigrant two years ago in San Francisco.
