Top Senate Democrat promises to block Trump's high court pick

"Gorsuch was groomed by the Federalist Society and has not shown one inch of difference between his views and theirs", Schumer said of the group which, along with the 501 (c) 4 group Judicial Crisis Network, spent approximately $10 million in dark money on the confirmation of Gorsuch.

Schumer also warned his Republican counterpart, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, against changing the Senate rules to prevent a filibuster.

The filibuster threat is not new, as Democrats began to threaten holding up the nominee even before Trump announced Gorsuch at the end of January. Republicans hold a 52-48 advantage in the chamber. "And that's not right, and we would have to change the rules to have the Supreme Court like everybody else".

Just a day earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court soundly rejected Gorsuch's decision in that case - welcome timing for Democrats who have been trying to build the case Gorsuch consistently rules against disadvantaged people and in favor of corporations.

As committee hearings on Gorsuch concluded Thursday, it appeared increasingly likely that Republicans hoping to elevate President Trump's choice for the court would resort to replacing long-standing rules with a simple majority vote on his confirmation.

Ford recalls 440K vehicles for fire risk, door latch trouble
The move will affect Ford's bottom line in the first quarter of the year, cutting pretax earnings by $295 million. The company recalled more than 2.3 million vehicles last fall because their door latches weren't working properly.

Judge Gorsuch's qualifications have not been called into question at his hearing, but Democrats have been frustrated at his refusal to signal any stance on such emotive areas as gun control, abortion and employee rights. Fischer counters that prominent Democrats had declared they would not consider any Supreme Court nominee made by President George W. Bush if a vacancy occurred in the last year-and-a-half of his presidency. If that was done, Gorsuch would need only a simple majority of 51 votes.

"Some of them can choose to be upset if they want to, but I think it would be best for everyone if we focused on what's before us, what's happening now rather than what happened a year ago", Lee said.

The Senate's top Democrat said on Thursday that Democrats would filibuster the confirmation of President Donald Trump's nominee for the United States Supreme Court, Judge Neil Gorsuch. Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent, also said they would vote against Trump's nominee, among at least 11 senators who say they will oppose Gorsuch in the face of pressure from liberals to resist all things Trump, including his nominees.

Among judges who have worked with him, U.S. District Judge John Kane praised Gorsuch's independence and cordiality.

During the hearings, Democrats deployed a number of strategies, starting with the complaint that the Supreme Court seat should already be filled by Judge Merrick Garland.
