White House invites lawmakers to see intelligence material

Rep. Schiff Calls On House Intel Chair To Recuse Himself From Russia Probe

The report from NYT claims that Chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA), who has refused to release his sources, held a press conference on March 22 to explain that he had intelligence reports on the surveillance of the Trump transition team, which occurred under the Obama Administration.

He later went to the White House to brief them on his findings, ushering in a wave of criticism from Democrats, including Rep. Adam Schiff, the party's ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee. In the letter, White House Counsel Don McGhan wrote the material related to whether "information collected on USA persons was mishandled and leaked". The material, he said, responded to the House Intelligence Committee's request for "documents necessary to determine whether information collected on US persons was mishandled and leaked".

Early last week, White House officials privately encouraged reporters to look into whether information about Trump associates had been improperly revealed in the intelligence gathering process.

Then, Tuesday, Nunes said that he had invited Comey again to come testify before the House intelligence committee.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House refused to say on Thursday whether it secretly fed intelligence reports to a top Republican investigating possible coordination between Russian Federation and the 2016 Trump campaign.

He declined to say what specific information the White House had uncovered, and couldn't say whether Trump himself had been briefed on the materials.

SYRIA The United States is no longer making removing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad a focus of its policy in the war-torn country, the United States' U.N. ambassador says. He has said he will not share his intel with the committee.

He said the chairmen and ranking members of the intelligence committees had requested the information as part of their probe into Russia's influence in last year's presidential election.

Trump spokesman Sean Spicer said Thursday the material the White House wants the House and Senate intelligence leaders to view was discovered by the National Security Council.

"I certainly think that we need to get to the bottom of this". "But our job is to do everything in our power to be responsible to go forward and be constructive and that's what we're doing".

That includes Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner, Schiff added.

A Senate intelligence committee source said members view Nunes' claims as a "sideshow" and feel no urgency to run to the White House to view the documents.
