Senate GOP needs Pence to break tie on family planning funds

In Congress' latest clash mixing the politics of abortion, women's health and states' rights, Pence cast the decisive vote in a 51-50 roll call.

Republican Sens. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine) joined all Democrats in voting against ending debate on the bill.

"The bill would permit conservative-leaning states to reinstate policies that block Planned Parenthood clinics and other providers from getting federal funding", he continued.

The Senate, after a procedural vote, will now proceed to a measure that would dismiss an Obama-era rule banning states from denying federal funds to such organizations.

"It is unprecedented that we are here with the vice president breaking a tie vote on an attack on women's health across this country", Sen.

Each year, the federal government gives money to states earmarked for family-planning services.

Pence also had to cast a second tiebreaking vote so the Senate could pass the measure. These are people who are low-income, they are uninsured, and they rely on the Title X program to get basic reproductive health care, and when I say basic reproductive health care I mean an annual wellness exam, a pap test, a breast exam, birth control, these are all preventive care.

Super Sindhu conquers Marin to win her maiden India Open title
Sindhu gave her best performance yet to beat Marin 21-19, 21-16 in a 46 minute summit clash, securing her first India Open title. Women doubles: 7-Shijo Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto (Jpn) bt 3-Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao (Jpn) 16-21, 21-19, 21-10.

Vice President Mike Pence was the deciding vote, both in a procedural vote earlier that morning and in the final vote to advance the bill.

The real change we need is a law that prohibits the use of federal funds to obtain any service whatsoever from Planned Parenthood.

Some people feel that states should be allowed to withhold funds from abortion providers, if they choose to.

With Republicans controlling the Senate 52-48, the Collins and Murkowski defections could have derailed the bill because Sen.

The move allows states to restrict family planning grants to Planned Parenthood and other providers that perform abortions.

Senate approval was planned later Thursday and would send the measure to President Trump, who was expected to sign it. The vote had been held open for a full hour so Isakson, who had just landed at Reagan National Airport after a flight from Atlanta, could make it. "People are sick and exhausted of politicians making it even harder for them to access health care", said the center's vice president, Dawn Laguens, according to the New York Daily News.

The regulation, enacted under the Obama administration, prevented states from discriminating against programs, like Planned Parenthood, when distributing Title X planning grants to community health centers, according to NBC News. Of the $4 million in federal funding, more than half of that, $2.5 million, goes to Planned Parenthood. "If that happens, that's like 40 percent of Planned Parenthood's budget, they are just going to be closing down clinics dozens of them".
