China rises in global tourism competitiveness

Reflects the importance Govt.is giving to tourism.

The World Economic Forum has announced the results of its global Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index 2017, with Ireland ranked number three out of 136 countries for "effectiveness of marketing and branding to attract tourists".

Completing the top 10 are Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Italy, Canada and Switzerland.

Although Spain, France and Germany continued to top the travel and tourism rankings in WEF's Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017, Asia stealed the show as the region's largest economies showed the greatest rise in tourism-friendliness.

Some of the factors that helped India climb up the ladder include global openness through strong policies such as implementing visa on arrival and e-visas, and improvements in the country's ground transport infrastructure which benefited the travel and tourism sector in the country, it added.

China had the highest score on cultural resources and business travel and ranked fifth on natural resources.

Sharma noted that Japan improved by five positions as compared to its last ranking and China gained two ranks, while the U.S. fell by two positions and Switzerland by four.

The report also sees China as a largest source market in the region with almost 128 million departures registered in 2015. Russian Federation is placed at the 43rd position and Turkey is ranked the 44th.

Brazil stands at 27th position in a ranking by the World Economic Forum of the tourism sector of 136 nations. "To reach their potential, the majority of countries still have more to do, from enhancing security, promoting their cultural heritage, building their infrastructure and creating stronger visa policies". "The capacity of countries to respond to and embrace these structural shifts will determine the future success of destinations", said Roberto Crotti, economist, WEF.
