Gov. Christie halts Amtrak payments, calls for inspection

"We were aware we had some issues in that area but we felt we had maintained it in proper order".

Read the whole thunderous letter here, but the point is that Christie says NJ Transit will stop paying Amtrak until "an independent examination" verifies that the tracks, signals, and other equipment is in a state-of-good-repair.

Moorman said Christie's threat won't help matters, but acknowledged the governor's frustration. "I will say that withdrawing funding is not going to solve any of the problems".

"As a tenant, New Jersey Transit will take all measures to hold Amtrak accountable", said Santoro.

Amtrak's $24 billion Gateway plan to build a new train tunnel under the Hudson River and fix the existing tunnel, is considered one of the most important infrastructure projects in the nation.

"We had a section where the timbers under the track were somewhat weak".

Moorman said Thursday he would begin personally reviewing infrastructure at all Amtrak stations as the company seeks to prevent future derailments.

"We had notations that these timbers needed to be replaced, but we clearly didn't have the understanding that there was an imminent failure", he said.

Chelsea Clinton Doesn't Expect Mom To Run A Third Time
Chelsea Clinton is putting questions about her political ambitions to bed, for now. She said she has learned about the developments through the media.

It has left thousands of commuters scrambling to find other ways to and from work or enduring long delays and overcrowded trains.

Amtrak says it has restored service on derailment-damaged tracks at New York's Penn Station - but commuters on New Jersey Transit and the Long Island Rail Road have been urged to allow for extra travel time.

Moorman admitted that Amtrak "got it wrong". "We disappointed our customers and we take responsibility for that".

Four days after a train derailed at New York's Penn Station and created major headaches for commuters, service is expected to return to normal.

Amtrak did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday morning. Noting that "We just made a bulk $62.5 million payment to Amtrak", Christie added, "I have no problem with making the payments". The results will be shared with NJ Transit the LIRR. NJ Transit had 271 accidents, or 18 percent of the total, compared with Amtrak's 44 percent, according to data from the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration Office of Safety Analysis. Christie has cut an annual state subsidy for the agency and diverted $2.94 billion in capital funding to day-to-day operations.

Amtrak for Thursday warned of modified service and delays for its Northeast Regional line operating between Washington and NY. It was relying on supplementary buses and ferries. FRA, which oversees heavy rail systems, such as Amtrak, dispatched a team of inspectors to Penn Station, shortly after Monday's derailment. Instead, officials are now fighting for federal money to support a new tunnel known as the Gateway project, but the project is in limbo with Trump's budget plan.

Christie canceled a new Hudson River tunnel project for which ground had already been broken soon after he took office in 2010, saying the cost was too high.
