Residents in Dallas were in for a rude awakening early Saturday morning when the entire city's emergency siren system went off repeatedly for about two hours.

City spokeswoman Sana Syed said officials believe the hack came from the Dallas area.

City officials are working with the Federal Communications Commission to figure out how the hack happened, said Rocky Vaz, the city's emergency management director, during a news conference Saturday afternoon.

Officials say all of the city's 156 outdoor sirens that are used to alert people to shelter indoors during severe weather were activated.

The city also reminded residents that they may hear sirens again as engineers determine if the system is functioning properly. Officials said there was no emergency and they were trying to determine what caused the malfunction.

Please don't call about the tornado sirens sporadically sounding in Dallas. A Google Trends feature revealed that the peak time people were searching online for information on why the sirens were blaring was at 11:48 p.m.

But the sirens weren't signaling the end of the world (or end of Dallas), and they were not malfunctioning, as early reports indicated. "Right now, our priority is to work on reactivating our system".

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings promised the perpetrator would be found and prosecuted.

Syed said that there was a surge in calls to 911 during the time the sirens were sounding. "It's a costly proposition, which is why every dollar of taxpayer money must be spent with critical needs such as this in mind".
