Wonga suffers data breach 'affecting 245000 United Kingdom customers'

A further 25,000 customers in Poland were also potentially affected, the report said.

Mishcon de Reya Cyber security Lead Joe Hancock, comments on the Wonga data breach this weekend, which affects around 245,000 customers in the United Kingdom and 25,000 in Poland.

Up to 245,000 Wonga customers may have been affected by a massive data breach that allegedly led to the theft of sort codes, account numbers, names, and addresses.

Just past year, Talk Talk was slapped with a record fine for a data breach, but of the almost 157,000 customers affected, most did not have their bank account details stolen. Customers have received a message from the payday lender telling them: "We believe there may have been illegal and unauthorised access to some of your personal data on your Wonga.com account". "We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused".

According to The Guardian, the attack happened last week but it was not until Friday that the company realised the information "could be accessed externally".

Cyber attacks have recently affected other British banks, businesses and institutions, including Tesco Bank, Lloyds, Talk-Talk, and the National Health Service.

Cormier sends warning to Jon Jones at UFC 210
For a fighter like Jones who likely earns more than $1 million on fight night, they would fall in the highest income tax bracket. There was also some question about whether Cormier grabbed the towel during the weigh-in which could have thrown things off.

Tesco Bank a year ago had to suspend online payments after £2.5m was stolen from customer accounts, while the likes of TalkTalk, Vodafone and Yahoo have suffered personal data breaches.

How many will be struck by the Wonga data breach?

Wonga has said it doesn't believe that customers' loan accounts have been affected but warns they should be vigilant.

The data breach is a blow to the company as it strives to rebuild its business in the wake of a string of scandals and a regulatory crackdown in the United Kingdom market.

Consequently there has been little sympathy for the company on social media with Twitter users saying that hackers are unlikely to find much to steal because Wonga "only preys on the poor and the vulnerable", and "haven't they stole enough already".

Police are now investigating the incident, which has been reported to the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
