Instagram Direct Adds Disappearing Photos and Videos to Direct Threads

The new update for Direct is rolling out today in the latest version of the Instagram app on Google Play.

Today, Instagram announced that it is launching what it calls the "New" Instagram Direct. When a disappearing message is received, it shows blue in the user's inbox, until it's replayed. Snapchat's last estimations of its own number of active users came in at around 161 million per day. It's now combining them with permanent messages to blue the difference between the two. The sender will receive a notification when the message has been replayed or a screenshot has been taken. An innovative Snapchat retaliation might be needed in order to bring back some investor confidence as the fledgling company has seen its stock decline steadily in its first month plus.

Alongside their DM update announcement Tuesday, Instagram also bragged about how many millions of people are using Direct these days. Permanent photos and videos can still be added to the conversation as well. Then, snap a photo or record a video.

Pearl Jam, Tupac, Yes, Journey to be inducted into Rock Hall
Geddy Lee of Rush surprised the crowd at Barclay's Center when he joined Yes for their 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame performance. Train frontman Pat Monahan inducted them, before partially singing one of Journey's hits, Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'.

Just a few days ago, Facebook completed its Snapchat cloning process by adding a new feature to its mobile app that lets users share ephemeral messages, including videos and images. Previously the stories feature was separate from the Direct feature but now users will be able to send disappearing photos and videos in the same chat thread as the text conversations.

Direct is a great way to keep the app tidy and free from too many features that get new users confused sometimes.

Ephemeral messaging within Direct became available in November, at which time Instagram said 300 million people were already using the permanent messaging tool. Of course, the direct conversations support text and reshares from the main feed, and they'll appear in the same thread with the disappearing media.
