Taiwan bans consumption of dog, cat meat

First in Asia: Taiwan bans eating of cats and dogs

Taiwan has banned the sale of dog and cat meat.

The island nation on Tuesday passed an amendment to its animal protection laws outlawing the consumption of dog and cat meat, according to CNN.

The law includes sale and possession of goods containing dog and cat parts.

The global animal rights campaigners believe that is the first step, which gets Taiwan closer to the protection of animals' rights. The offender's name and photograph will be made public.

The Animal Protection Act was sponsored by Kuomintang Legislator Wang Yu-min, who said that measures banning dog and cat meat consumption were already implemented locally, but the legislation needed to be expanded nationally. Taiwan is the first country in Asia to impose such a ban, The Guardian and BBC reported.

In Hong Kong, killing dogs or cats for food is illegal and can be punished by imprisonment of six months and a HK$5,000 fine, though the consumption of the animals is not banned.

Sevilla got a goal in the first minute by Stevan Jovetic, and overcame a double by Gael Kakuta, to end a six-game winless streak. Zidane has seen speculation mount his position could be under scrutiny should Real fail to go on to deliver the La Liga title.

More and more, dogs and cats are seen as pets; Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen frequently posed with her two cats during her 2016 presidential campaign, and she has adopted three dogs since her election.

The move also bans people from using a vehicle or motorbike to pull their pets alongside them while travelling. Each year, the festival attracts the wrath of animal rights activists who call the practice of slaughtering dogs inhumane. Tsai even brought her two adopted cats along on the campaign trail prior to her election previous year, while promising to do more to protect animals, reports the Telegraph.

As reported by CNN, violators of the new law could face up to two years in prison and a $8,200 fine.

Last year, a video showing a group of military personnel beating up a dog, strangling it and tossing the body into the ocean sparked public protests.

In 2016, Chinese and worldwide animal rights activists presented a petition with 11 million signatures to protest the dog-meat festival, The Washington Post's Simon Denyer reported.

More than 800 dogs also have been rescued from animal farms in South Korea, according to Humane Society International.
