Venezuela protesters target Maduro, vow to keep up pressure

Venezuelan bishops back anti-government protests, civil disobedience

The opposition is planning what Guevara called the "mother of all protest marches" on 19 April against Maduro.

The opposition groups organising it said they would not reveal the destination of the march until everyone had gathered, to prevent the security forces from blocking their way.

"They can not give a standing ovation to the man responsible for the worst humanitarian crisis in our history!"

Demonstrators help a journalist who was injured in a leg while covering clashes between demonstrators and the Bolivarian National Guard during a protest in Caracas, Venezuela, Monday, April 10, 2017. Authorities later accused opponents of "manipulating" videos. The state prosecutor's office said in a statement on Tuesday that a 20-year old man had been fatally shot in the neck on Monday night at a protest in the city of Valencia.

Alfredo Romero, executive director of the Venezuelan Criminal Forum monitoring group, on Tuesday said that since protests began two weeks ago, security forces carried out 281 arrests. She also appealed to “security forces to operate in accordance with global human rights standards for the management of assemblies.” The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Raad Zeid al-Hussein, has asked for an independent investigation into the death of Jairo Ortiz, 19, who died last week in Carrizal municipality in Miranda state on the outskirts of Caracas. Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said police had arrested 18 people in the clashes.

This award is incredible to me because of all the people who have allowed me to join their lives and their bands". Lenny Kravitz will perform in a memorial tribute to Prince, who passed away April 21, 2016.

While that decision has since been reversed, protests have continued against what the opposition describes as a "coup d'etat" against the legislature. He was seen by many as the opposition's best chance in the presidential election scheduled for 2018, but on Friday was banned from holding political office for 15 years.

Venezuelans have been irate for months over shortages of basic goods and roaring inflation that have led to millions skipping meals or surviving on starches.

The European External Action Service issued a statement stressing that the Venezuelan people has the right to peacefully demonstrate and to see the political conflict immediately solved. Maduro says that under a veneer of pacifism, the opposition is actually encouraging violent protests in a bid to topple his government.

Opposition leaders said police launched gas canisters at the entrace to a hospital, forcing the evacuation of an infant. "Who is taking responsibility for damage to public property and persons?" "What is their agenda?"

Authorities last year cancelled an opposition campaign to hold a recall referendum on Maduro and no date has yet been set for gubernatorial elections that were supposed to take place last year. Local elections, due previous year, have yet to be called.
