Cold snap: massive iceberg just off coast draws Canadians eager for close-up

Tourists flock to small Canadian town to see huge iceberg drifting off the coast

Canada's CBC News said that over the Easter weekend, the Southern Shore highway near the town was blocked with traffic as photographers pulled up to snap pictures.

The iceberg was reportedly 46 meters high, and Kavanagh said it had been stranded in shallow waters off the Avalon Peninsula. "It's the biggest one I ever seen around here", Kavanaugh said.

The early arrival and abundance of icebergs has caused concern for some scientists and observers, as experts have attributed the early bergs to strong counter-clockwise winds or possibly to climate change.

More icebergs have drifted into major shipping lanes off Newfoundland, forcing ships to go far out of their way to steer clear of the large ice mountains. "It's in so close that people can get a good photograph of it".

As of Monday, there were about 450 icebergs near the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, up from 37 a week earlier, according to the US Coast Guard's International Ice Patrol in New London, Connecticut. The average for this time of year is about 80. This year, there's been a big uptick in icebergs traveling through what is knows as "iceberg alley".

Trump takes aim at H-1B visa program
The number of application for H1-B visas fell to 199,000 this year from 236,000 in 2016 and 233,000 in 2015, according to U.S. The second plank of the president's order will tighten the process for issuing visas to foreign workers.

This particular iceberg has taken up residence and it looks like it's here to stay.

Most icebergs entering the North Atlantic have "calved" off the Greenland ice sheet.

The small town of Ferryland is shocked by the number of tourists. There were 1165 icebergs in 2015 and 687 in 2016. The Canadian Press reports that 616 have already moved into the North Atlantic shipping lanes compared to 687 by the late-September season's end previous year.

Life is fairly simple for the 500-or-so residents of Ferryland, on Canada's east coast.

Iceberg boat tours are a popular excursion but for some visitors to Ferryland, the season opening will be too late, according to Costello.
