WH: Georgia's Special Election 'A Big Loss' for Democrats

While Jon Ossoff did not get the more than 50 percent of the vote to win the election outright on Tuesday, the young Democrat is headed to a June 2 runoff against top Republican vote-getter Karen Handel.

But Ossoff, a documentary filmmaker and former congressional aide, told energized supporters that he and Democrats "shattered expectations" with their performance. "And while Republicans have their backs against the wall, Democrats will keep their foot on the gas through Election Day because the residents of Georgia's 6district deserve a representative who will fight for them", he said. Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state, did not mention Trump during a 10-minute speech on Tuesday night, according to local media. But with 185 of 210 precincts reporting, he held 48.3 percent of the vote - just shy of the 50 percent he needed to become the first Democrat to represent Atlanta's affluent northern suburbs since the 1970s.

"The racial demographics are a little bit different, and actually some of the income demographics", she says.

Trump ran historically poorly for a Republican in this district.

Donald Trump will probably help answer that last question if he gives Ossoff voters, donors, and volunteers fresh reason for outrage by gloating over his failure to win a majority in the first round.

Ossoff netted 48.1 percent of the vote but did not become the clear victor of the race to fill the 6th Congressional District's House seat vacated by now-Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price.

Volvo announces plans to export China-made electric car
The two are SUV models tailored from the outset to satisfy the needs of Chinese consumers, the companies said in statements. But at the same time, it is cutting subsidies on green cars by a fifth this year, which could deepen manufacturers' losses.

While Handel kept her distance from Trump, Ossoff launched his bid with an email solicitation inviting liberals to "Make Trump Furious". He also dismissed Republican claims that he did not live in the district, pointing out that he grew up there and was now living with his girlfriend one mile outside the boundary.

Republicans escaped a potentially loss on Tuesday night by forcing a runoff in a Georgia special congressional election, seen as an early referendum in Trump. But the large field of candidates and the contentious start of Trump's four-year presidency has boosted interest in the outcome 19 months ahead of congressional contests across the U.S. More than $14 million has been spent on advertising in the race.

It was a near-miss for Democrats in Georgia's 6th Congressional District - and President Donald Trump was crowing about the opposition party falling short.

Last Tuesday it was a special election in Kansas where the Republican candidate did just enough to win. Republicans, get out and vote!

HANDEL: Again, it is all Republicans all hands on deck.
