Canadian PM responds to Trump's criticism of dairy industry

Reading from handwritten notes during an Oval Office signing for an unrelated memorandum, Trump called Canada's actions a "disgrace" and said the Canadian measures have hurt dairy farmers in Wisconsin and NY.

President Trump has attacked Canada's new milk-production system as "a disgrace" that's living on borrowed time.

Canadian Natural Resource Minister Jim Carr told The Associated Press that the government will make its arguments about trade based on facts. "It is an unwise policy that violates our agreements and hurts our farmers, and we agreed to work together to immediately address the issue", he said.

Under supply management, strict controls are set on the amount of dairy products produced domestically in Canada, and imports are limited with high tariffs.

"President Trump and I spoke yesterday about reversing Canada's new and unfair dairy-pricing policy".

Trump, while in Kenosha, Wis., on Tuesday spoke out against the "very, very unfair policy" that is blocking US exports of ultra-filtered milk, which is used to make cheese. "We're going to have to get to the negotiating table with Canada very, very quickly".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, right, shakes hands with Italy's Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni as he arrives for a working visit on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Ontario, on Friday, April 21, 2017. Gentiloni and Trudeau on the other hand were keen to display their support for free trade and open borders, including the Canada-EU free trade pact, amid growing populist opposition.

Gentiloni had been in Washington on Thursday.

Italy is to host the G7 leaders' summit next month, which will be part of Trump's entry into the world of multilateral summitry.
