US Navy fires warning flare at Iran vessel in Persian Gulf

Rex Tillerson

The U.S. Navy ship altered its course after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard vessel came within about 1,000 yards of the USS Mahan.

Iranian authorities did not immediately report the incident on Wednesday.

The official said the Iranian vessel had its weapons manned and came within approximately 1,000 yards of the U.S. destroyer.

The Mahan, a guided missile destroyer, managed to dodge the Iranian ship and avoid a clash.

"CENTCOM explained the Iranian vessel came within 1,100 yards of the Mahan and was "closing the distance despite the Mahan maneuvering to open the distance between the two vessels".

But he said despite the provocations, the Mahan did not fire any warning shots.

Petitions to cancel Turkey referendum result rejected by electoral board
The new system outlined under the constitutional changes will take full effect at the next election, slated for November 2019 . A little more than 51 percent of Turks voted in favor of the executive presidency, with a turnout of over 85%.

In January, the same United States vessel fired three warning shots at a group of Iranian ships that approached it at high speed in the Strait of Hormuz.

US Defense officials said at the time that despite radio calls, flares, bells and whistles to signal the Iranian ships to stay away, they had no effect. During his 2016 campaign speeches, President Donald Trump vowed to alter or terminate the deal if better terms could not be worked out for America.

In 2016, there were 35 incidents of unsafe or unprofessional behavior by the Middle Eastern nation's ships, the site concludes. With Monday's event, there have been seven so far in 2017, McConnaughey said.

This latest incident is among a growing list of Iranian provocations against USA forces, mostly maritime, in the region.
