United Airlines settles case with Asian American passenger dragged off flight

How United selects passengers for involuntary bumping

United Airlines reached an "amicable settlement" with David Dao, the passenger dragged off a full flight earlier this month sparking worldwide outrage, his attorneys have said. The airline also announced that it's reached a financial settlement with David Dao, the man kicked off the plane in Chicago. The agreement includes a provision that the amount will remain confidential.

Travelers check in at the United Airlines ticket counter at Terminal 1 in O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, December 21, 2013. His lawyer claimed he lost teeth and suffered a broken nose and concussion in the incident.

"We look forward to implementing the improvements we have announced, which will put our customers at the center of everything we do", McCarthy said.

United will "empower its personnel to make decisions and find solutions that make sense for both customers and employees", Munoz said in a letter to senators Wednesday that was sent in response to inquiries about the unusual removal. The attorney said United took full responsibility for the incident and did not blame the Chicago officials.

Viral videos of Dao being dragged down the aisle of the United jet and Munoz's handling of the incident touched off a public outcry, and prompted calls from congressmen for new industry regulation.

Nasdaq breaches 6000 mark for first time ever
The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 1.1% to 20996, and the S&P 500 added 0.6%. The net revision was up by 43,000.

And on Thursday United announced there will be additional training for front-line employees on how to deal with hard situations and make on-the-spot decisions.

It is not clear whether United oversold Flight 3411, but the flight became overbooked when four Republic Airline employees showed up after passengers had boarded and demanded seats so they could commute to their next assignment, a United Express flight the next morning.

In the settlement, a clause was added to discharge the Chicago Police from responsibility in regards to the incident, as well as the company that operated the flight in question for United; Republic Airways.

Rather than dumping overbooking, United announced Wednesday that it's increased the maximum compensation it will give passengers who accept getting bumped voluntarily to $10,000. When the airline realized that there weren't enough volunteers, they chose Dr. Dao's seat at random and asked him to leave.

Earlier Thursday United rolled out a host of reforms to its business practices, including limits to the use of law enforcement, not forcing customers to give up their seats "unless safety or security is at risk", and rolling back the amount of overbooking.
