Nigeria leader meets Chibok girls, leaves for medical trip

82 freed Chibok schoolgirls to meet with Nigerian president

Reports state that the aide group acted as a mediator as Nigeria exchanged the Boko Haram suspects in return for the girls' release Saturday.

The lawmaker while speaking with Vanguard said, "The swap commanders are five, and not two as reported".

Dozens of Chibok schoolgirls being kept captive by Islamist militants, were set free on Saturday after years of tense negotiations.

The statement credits the Government of Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross, among other N.G.Os, with helping negotiate the girls' release.

113 girls are now unaccounted for.

Boko Haram seized a total of 276 girls in the 2014 abduction.

The girls released in October have been reported to be in government care in Abuja for medical attention, trauma counselling and rehabilitation, according to the government.

"Congrats Nigeria", the president's special adviser Femi Adesina tweeted.

Nigerians gathered in front of newsstands Monday looking at the names of freed schoolgirls in local papers.

As word of the latest release emerged, long-suffering family members said they were eagerly awaiting a list of names and "our hopes and expectations are high". Neither Nigeria's government nor Boko Haram, which has links to the Islamic State group, gave details about the exchange.

Some relatives never lived to see their daughters' freed. Numerous captive girls, majority Christians, were forced to marry their captors and give birth to children in remote forest hideouts without knowing if they would see their parents again. It is feared that other girls were strapped with explosives and sent on missions as suicide bombers.

Military and civilian militia sources in the town of Banki, on the border with Cameroon, said the girls had left for Borno state capital Maiduguri on board six military helicopters. May 2015: New President Muhammadu Buhari is sworn in, pledging to tackle Boko Haram "head-on".

On Friday, the U.S. and Britain issued warnings that the Islamist group was planning to kidnap foreigners "along the Kumshe-Banki axis" in Borno state. "Their life in captivity has been one that depicts suffering, it depicts the fact that they have been starved, abused, and as we have seen before some of those girls have come back with children, and some of them have also come back with news of how they have been sexually abused".

Though Boko Haram has abducted thousands of people during its eight-year insurgency that has spilled across Nigeria's borders, the Chibok mass kidnapping horrified the world and brought the extremist group worldwide attention. Militants have killed more than 20,000 people, forced over 2.5 million to be displaced and adbucted thousands of women, forcing them into sexual slavery or marriages with its fighters.

Although the Nigerian government past year claimed to have "crushed" the militant group, its members have continued to carry out attacks.
