Senate confirms Heather Wilson as Trump's Air Force secretary

Heather Wilson R-N.M. is seen in Albuquerque N.M. Wilson President Donald Trump’s pick for Air Force secretary was on track for Senate confirmation on Monday

In addition, Wilson served on the Armed Services Committee. She served until 1989, including in Europe during the Cold War.

Wilson, 56, graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1982 and obtained a doctorate from the University of Oxford, after which she served in the Air Force for seven years.

There had been a considerable amount of debate before Wilson was finally confirmed.

Wilson denied any impropriety and said she complied fully with her contract for the consulting services.

"We live in a remarkable country, protected by innovators and intrepid Airmen who take great risks on our behalf", she said in a statement.

Wilson was also involved in the George W. Bush U.S. attorneys scandal.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, is a strong supporter of Wilson's, and said in an April 7 floor speech that Wilson distinguished herself as a member of the House Intelligence Committee, and is "a person of great intellect, strong management and superlative character".

The telephone call referenced by Reed, the senator from Rhode Island, was made by Wilson in October 2006 to David Iglesias, a US attorney in New Mexico. Reed said the call raised the possibility Iglesias may have felt pressured by Congress in an ongoing investigation.

U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, who faced Wilson in an famously brutal primary election for U.S. Senate in 2008, praised the Senate's confirmation of his former U.S. House colleague.

Trump nominated her for the Air Force secretary post in late January, and the Senate Armed Services Committee approved her nomination April 5 with a 22-5 vote.

Wilson said that once confirmed she would resign as president of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.

Trump's pick for secretary of the Army, Mark Green, was forced to withdraw his name from consideration Friday following the controversy surrounding his past remarks on LGBT issues, Islam and evolution. CNN first unearthed those videos.

The president's first pick to be the Army's top civilian, Vincent Viola, dropped out in early February because of financial entanglements, and about three weeks later Philip B. Bilden, the Navy secretary nominee, withdrew for similar reasons. As secretary, Wilson will oversee work at Canon, Holloman and Kirtland Air Force bases in New Mexico, among others nationwide.
