A New Orleans city worker wearing body armor and a face covering as he measures the Jefferson Davis monument on May 4, 2017 in New Orleans, Loiusiana. Morris Jeff Community School staff sent out a recorded message late Wednesday to parents, saying that the New Orleans Police Department had confirmed that the Jefferson Davis monument would be removed overnight. The monument is the second of four monuments to be removed.

Protests for and against monuments have increased since April 24 the city brought down the Battle of Liberty Place obelisk, which denoted a victory for a white supremacist group against the Reconstruction police force of New Orleans.

"You can not oppress our heritage", says another protester who wants the statues to stay.

The mayor's office said the city has secured private funding to remove the moments.

Several police cars and barricades lined the vicinity of the statue.

Confederacy statues and flags have been removed from public spaces across the United States since 2015, after a white supremacist murdered nine black parishioners at a SC church. "We're going to move forward with taking the monuments down".

"I believe we must remember all of our history, but we need not revere it. And that means we will no longer allow the Confederacy to literally be put on a pedestal in the heart of our city".

"This should be a celebration but instead this is done clandestinely".

Statues of Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard are expected to be removed in the coming weeks, though a legal challenge was heard Wednesday about the Beauregard equestrian monument.

Two years ago, Mayor Mitch Landrieu signed an ordinance that prompted the removal and relocation of four confederate statues.

The New Orleans monument that was taken down has been the subject of frequent vandalism in past years.

Early Thursday, pro-monument supporters held vigil at the Davis statue and hoisted Confederate flags.

Jefferson Davis was a U.S. representative and senator from MS who later led the Confederacy during the Civil War.

The 6-foot-tall bronze statue stands atop a roughly 12-foot tall column in a street also named after Davis. Beauregard was a prominent general during the Civil War and the last survivor of the top Confederate leaders.

The statue stands in a roundabout at the entrance of City Park and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Davis lived in New Orleans after the Civil War and died there in 1889.

There's no word of any physical confrontation, but plenty of slandering from both sides as the argument continues over what should be done with the monuments.
