The Orange County Sheriff's Department urged paddleboarders in the area to exit the water calmly and swiftly.

The last thing anyone participating in a water activity in the ocean wants to learn is that they are swimming next to a great white shark.

The sharks migrate south when the waters off California dip below 60 degrees in the winter.

The video opens with a close-up shot of a great white shark swimming in a turquoise ocean.

Reports indicate that most of the sharks spotted in Long Beach were in the 6-foot range.

"For a great white shark, a seal is a big juicy steak with a slice of chocolate cake", she said.

A swimmer reported a close encounter with one of the sharks, which appeared particularly aggressive at the Church break at San Onofre.

"Well unlike normal, they pretty much complied immediately", Stockbridge said. A shark advisory is issued when "there is a confirmed sighting of a non-aggressive shark".

According to marine biologist Chris Lowe, who runs the shark lab at California State University in Long Beach, the shark population is increasing. "We think they do that because that's a safe place". Advisories were posted for beaches up and down Southern California after shark sightings this week. Closures occur when a shark attacks, which can range from anything from a bite or a bump of a surfboard.

Since 1950, there have been less than two dozen confirmed shark attacks in San Diego County - and only two fatalities among those incidents. They've been protected in USA waters since 2005. He said they lingered most of the summer and then disappeared.

It's also recommended that people stick to populated beaches and avoid remote locations, especially where rivers empty into the sea.
