Award-winning Crime Reporter Killed in Mexico

Veteran journalist Javier Valdez killed in Mexico's Sinaloa

Journalists in the US and Mexico are reeling from the death of Mexican reporter Javier Valdez Cárdenas, who was shot dead on Monday in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, where he lived and worked.

Journalist Javier Valdez was shot and killed when an unknown number of assailants opened fire on his vehicle, according to the website of online media outlet RioDoce, which he helped found and where he continued to work. The official was not authorised to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, the Associated Press news agency reported.

Valdez worked for the national daily newspaper La Jornada and the local weekly Riodoce. Instead of its normal content, the site published a black Web page featuring photos of Valdez and other journalists killed this year.

Veteran reporter, who covered drug trafficking and organised crime, was the fifth journalist killed in Mexico this year. "He never talked about it so as not to drag people into it", Rafael Valdez told AFP. "I don't want to be asked, 'What were you doing in the face of so much death. why didn't you say what was going on?'"

By the group's count, some 40 journalists have been killed in Mexico for reasons confirmed as related to their work since 1992.

Mexican and foreign journalists paid homage to Valdez on social media, describing him as a courageous writer and generous friend whose killers must be brought to justice to deter future slayings. "You have to fight to change things'".

Mexico's Network of Journalists from the Northeast expressed their condemnation and demanded that Mexico's government stop turning a blind eye to the escalating violence.

It meant nobody inside the HSE could receive emails from outside or access the internet or external based platforms. However, he said the PSNI "cannot rule out the possibility that local systems may be vulnerable".

In Sinaloa there has also been a fragmentation and power struggle among factions in the drug cartel of the same name following the arrest and extradition to the United States of notorious kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.

Valdez's most recent book, "Narcoperiodismo" (Narco-journalism), addresses the challenges of practicing journalism in a region ruled by drug-traffickers.

The other four journalists killed this year were also targeted while out and about.

Valdez Cárdenas reported extensively on the Mexican drug trade and he received the Committee to Protect Journalists' International Press Freedom Award for his reporting on crime and drug trafficking.

Last Wednesday, the federal Attorney General's Office replaced the head of its division responsible for investigating journalist killings.

On Tuesday, the front pages of the country's major newspapers carried pictures of Valdez as journalists demonstrated in the centre of the capital, Mexico City. Ricardo Sanchez Perez del Pozo, a lawyer with a background in worldwide law and human rights, took over the post.
