Chinese Sukhoi-30 jets intercept American radiation-sniffing plane, says US

Chinese fighter jets intercept US nuclear aircraft over East China Sea

The Su-30 jets came within 150 feet of the WC-135 aircraft, a USA official told CNN, adding one of the Chinese aircrafts flew inverted, or upside down, directly above the American plane.

The American aircraft was conducting a routine mission in accordance with global law when the two Chinese SU-30 jets made the move, Pacific Air Forces spokeswoman Lt. Col. Lori Hodge told The Associated Press.

A plane based at Offutt Air Force Base near Bellevue was involved in what USA officials are calling an "unprofessional" intercept by two Chinese fighter jets over the Yellow Sea on Wednesday.

Commenting on the incident, Russian defense analyst, retired Colonel Alexander Zhilin, a military expert who heads the Center for the Study of Applied Problems of National Security told Radio Sputnik that the United States continues its reconnaissance activities in the South and the East China Seas. "The US is concerned over China's clear statement that it is its region and it controls it", the military analyst told Sputnik.

Wednesday's incident was the second between USA and Chinese planes this year.

American officials deemed the close call "unprofessional" behavior on the part of the Chinese.

Hodge declined to provide further details and said the issue would be addressed with China through "appropriate diplomatic and military channels".

One Belt, One Road
The China Development Bank alone has earmarked $890 billion for some 900 projects. Some Belt and Road projects are already raising concerns in certain countries.

In May 2016, over the South China Sea, two PLAAF Shenyang J-11 fighters flew within 50 feet of a U.S. Navy EP-3 Aries signals reconnaissance aircraft.

News confirmed from U.S. officials that the WC-135 was operating in accordance with global law.

The planes have been used in the past to collect evidence of nuclear tests conducted by North Korea, according to CNN.

"This is escalating the situation and absolutely unacceptable", Defense Minister Tomomi Inada told a news conference on Friday, referring to the incursion and drone flight.

China's Defense Ministry however, reportedly said the USA was just "hyping up the issue".

China cites historical records for its claim, and Japan's nationalization of several of the islands in 2012 led to anti-Japanese riots in China.
